Harvard researchers prove social aspect to U.S. obesity rates

Obesity has been epidemic in the United States for years. Recent statistics show obesity rates continue to rise even with fitness 
promotions everywhere.

According to a study published in the PLoS Computational Biology journal on Nov. 4, obesity rates will hit 42 percent of all Americans by 2050. Moreover, our susceptibility to obesity is influenced by people around us. The study examined individuals who were measured every three to eight years, specifically looking at the data to find what leads to obesity. A social component was found. As David Rand, a Harvard University researcher for the study said, obesity is contagious.

Insight Psychological Centers Joins Women’s Health Practice in Willowbrook, Illinois

Insight Psychological Centers, a leading provider of intensive group programming for eating disorders, depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder, will begin serving the Willowbrook area on November 1st.

Insight has signed an agreement with West Suburban Women’s Health, a women’s health center providing integrative health services, to provide eating disorders, emotional overeating and mental health programming in the southwest suburbs. “We are very excited about the addition of Insight into our community of women’s health services,” explains Dr. Joan Cardone. West Suburban Women’s Health is the home to women’s health services ranging from OB/GYN and lactation classes to medically supervised spa services including laser services and skin rejuvenation.

Chicago Weight-loss Program Adds Psychotherapy to the Mix

A new group program led by the Chicago-based Insight Psychological Centers aims to target obesity from the inside and out.

The program provides not only lessons in nutrition and exercise, but also psychotherapy sessions that explore participants’ relationships to food, reasons behind weight gain and the skill-building needed to manage weight independently.

“Most of us know that eating and weight problems are not caused by one issue,” said Jenny Conviser, co-director at Insight. The centers, led by staff from Northwestern University, also focus on mental health, eating disorders and therapy for couples dealing with infertility.
